Syrah & Shiraz

Syrah and Shiraz are names for the same grape. The name on the label is a useful clue, but the individual bottle gives you more to compare.

01

Compare the weight, not the spelling

Two wines labelled Syrah and Shiraz can differ in body and alcohol. So can two bottles using the same name. Keep the producer and origin in view rather than treating either spelling as a fixed style.

02

Consider the seasoning

A substantial red can suit roast lamb or a rich sauce. With barbecue, account for sweetness and chilli as well as the meat. A very tannic, high-alcohol bottle may be less comfortable with heat.

03

Take a tasting note you can use again

Separate aroma from texture in your notes. A fruit description may help you recognise the wine, but body, tannin and alcohol can be more useful when finding another bottle for the same meal.
