Thanksgiving wine pairing

Turkey is only part of the Thanksgiving pairing. Gravy, cranberry sauce and sweet sides can have more influence on the wine than the roast itself.

Wine and food on a linen-laid dining table

Offer a fresh white and a supple red if you want to cover several dishes without matching each one separately. Let guests choose. Keep a different pairing for pie, and calculate the bottles from your planned pours rather than the length of the evening.

01

For the turkey and the trimmings

A lighter red or a white with some texture can work across roast poultry and gravy. Check how sweet or tangy your sides are: a generous helping of cranberry sauce changes the pairing. Aim for enough freshness in the wine to stay comfortable through the meal.

02

For the vegetable dishes

Mushroom dishes can make firm tannin feel more severe. Consider a supple red or a textured white. Roasted vegetables add their own sweetness, so include any glaze or dressing when asking for a pairing.

Choose separately for pie

Dinner wine can taste unexpectedly sharp with pie. A dessert wine needs enough sweetness for the filling, with acidity to keep the combination from feeling heavy. A small pour is often enough.
